Administration

Marty Mathiesen, Principal

I am extremely proud to serve our community as Nevada Union High School principal. I have the pleasure and good fortune to work with talented, dedicated, passionate teachers, counselors, administrators and classified staff who have consistently delivered solid instruction and academic support. This is evidenced by state mandated testing scores (765 API), graduation rates (over 99%), and post-secondary educational enrollment at 80%.

NU is a large high school, yet you will find a positive and friendly culture. As a new principal, I was pleased to find students very well mannered, enthusiastic and involved in their school. Students can choose to participate in any of the 43 clubs or 43 athletic teams offered here at NU. Any school day, from as early as 6:00 to late in the evening, campus is busy with students, parents, staff and community members involved with extra curricular activities.

Nevada Union offers an impressive student schedule with over 100 singletons (one section/class once a day), Advanced Placement courses, and seven Honors courses. Additionally, the daily schedule includes a zero period and an eighth period with two lunch periods. The overall schedule is very comprehensive but also allows teachers to focus on their teaching strengths and personal passions in education.

The Visual and Performing Arts Department is a very popular department with NU students. Top-level dance, drama, music, choir, photography, ceramics, panting and drawing courses are full of not only talented students, but also talented instructors.

The Agricultural Department Future Farmers of America involve all types of students presenting them with experiences and activities that are not only fun, but teach them professional and life skills needed to be successful adults.

Nevada Union also provides two small learning communities, Humanities and Partnership Academies, which present opportunities for cross-curricular teaching and learning strategies in those smaller learning environments. The 49er Regional Occupation Program presents many additional vocational courses for students along with NU Tech and Home Base that allow for modified daily schedules for those students who may work.

With the support of the parents, businesses and overall community, I will continue the long-standing tradition of success at Nevada Union High School. It is my pleasure to work at NU with consummate educational staff in an educational environment where students always come first.
